The standard front-hinged door with a retractable glass window made its debut in 1907, and has remained the idea of the most practical door design to this day. It even begs the question if the style might be one of the most modest automotive innovations ever. But doors have had their moments of madness. Sliding doors, retractable bubbles, and even no doors at all have made their appearances, or lack of. Meanwhile, unique designs like winged doors continue to bounce back like boomerangs, showing off with style on the infamous DeLorean and returning for practicality on modern Teslas. Doors continue to be a starting-point for inspiration in automotive design to this day, and we’re celebrating the greatest ones.
